san francisco

i live
at the gates
of the pacific
i'm familiar
with the winds
the tides
'n
the sun
that sets
in the far east
west of here

columbus avenue
(north beach)

i'd like
to remember
the curved
art deco windows
the sun reflecting
off them at sunset

in the morning
a slight lull

a shadow creeping
over the buildings
asleep
on the other side
of the street

i'd like
to remember
columbus avenue
at 7 minutes to eight
summer evenings, and
7 minutes after seven
winter mornings

gaudi theatre
(barcelona)

far
from
california
i
feel
far
from
california

from his book
Cities of the Sky

in a foreign land

to speak
slowly as
a child
to accent
every word
with a smile

from Cities of the Sky

pop-pop

just
imagine
a moon full
of boys with

the latest
technological
popguns

aimed
at you

pop poppop

a retrospective

once we
understand
that most human

endeavor is farcical

we can begin
our reconciliation
with the earth

athens

a frenetic city
where chaoses
endless possibilities
open at your feet, and
the hot water fails those
who need it most

a world of smiles

the world
is full
of places
where every

thing

is done
differently
than anywhere

else

working on this
bemusing problem

someone's insisting
there's only one way

to solve it

i don't even
raise my eyes
but keep smiling

i could be in tibet
as far as that goes

where the perception
of the problem
would undoubtedly be

different

but
my smile
the same
